What is Science?
To define or explain Science as a course, one needs to first understand what the word “science” means. Science is derived from the Latin word “Scientia,” meaning knowledge. Science is knowledge gotten through the study, practice, or knowledge covering general truths of the operation of general laws, especially as obtained and tested through the scientific method that is ONLY concerned with the physical world.
Reason Why Science Courses are Better.
- Science is basically used in our everyday lives (this includes our homes, offices, industries, etc).
- It makes good governance and order possible through the use of technology.
- Science provides job opportunities.
- Science offers viable solutions to a myriad of domestic, societal and industrial problems we face as Humans.
- Science helps in the development of alternative sources of energy.
- It is the bedrock of development and societal advancement.
- Science is fun and can be immensely enjoyed.
- It makes you analytical and logical in reasoning.

General Admission Requirements for Science Courses.
Warning: Take note that Most academic institutions in Nigeria do set specific cut-off marks for each course, depending on the number of candidates applying, limited available admission slots, etc, this is why a candidate who scored 180 can be admitted to study Architecture, but 180 won’t get you admitted into major basic Medical science courses.
However, these are the general and major admission requirements for all science courses offered in all tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
- Candidate applying for admission to study any science course is required to have at the very least, five (5) O’level credit at not more than two sittings. This must include Mathematics, English Language, and Chemistry. The remaining two subjects could be Biology, Physics, Agricultural Science, and Geography. However, you should know that in major science courses, you’re required to have credits in Physics and Biology.
- Choosing the right JAMB subject combination for your course is extremely important. Most science courses usually include the following subjects, and these subjects should be your area of focus. These include the use of English, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Mathematics depending on your selected course of study.
- Candidates seeking admission to study any science course through the JAMB Direct Entry (also known as JAMB DE), must have at least Upper Credit in a science-related course.
- While for candidates who are applying for admission through Cambridge A level result, it’s mandatory that you must have at least, BBB in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics (three [3] of these subjects are needed depending on your selected course.)
- If you want to study any science course in Nigeria, it’s mandatory that you must write UTME and score above the official 2023 JAMB cut-off mark required by your selected University.
- If the institution you selected does use Post-UTME exercise as screening for admission, try your best to score 55% or above.
